What has to be on a WHMIS workplace label?

Under WHMIS 2015, a workplace label is simpler than a supplier label. It needs three pieces of information:

Product identifier

The product name, matching the supplier label and the safety data sheet, so workers can find the right SDS.

Safe handling information

Precautions for handling the product safely. It can include pictograms or other information from the supplier label.

Reference to the SDS

A statement that a safety data sheet is available, when one exists for the product.

When you need a workplace label

  • ✓The product is decanted or transferred from the supplier container into another container
  • ✓The product is produced in the workplace and used there
  • ✓The supplier label is lost, damaged, or no longer legible

Provinces, territories, and federally regulated workplaces each set their own WHMIS workplace rules, so check yours for exemptions and any extra requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What has to be on a WHMIS workplace label?+

Three things: the product identifier (product name), information for the safe handling of the product, and a statement that a safety data sheet (SDS) is available, if there is one. Pictograms and other information from the supplier label are allowed but not required. Check your provincial or federal occupational health and safety rules for any extra requirements.

When do I need a WHMIS workplace label?+

When a hazardous product is decanted or transferred into another container, when it is made in the workplace and used there, or when the supplier label is lost or can no longer be read. There are limited exemptions, for example for a portable container filled and used immediately by the same worker; check your jurisdiction’s rules.

Is a WHMIS workplace label the same as a supplier label?+

No. The supplier label is put on by the manufacturer, importer, or distributor and has strict content and bilingual requirements under the Hazardous Products Regulations. A workplace label is simpler and is the employer’s responsibility. This tool makes workplace labels only.

Does a WHMIS label need the hatched border?+

Under WHMIS 2015 the hatched border is not required on workplace labels, but many workplaces keep it because workers recognize it. This tool lets you turn it on or off.

Do WHMIS workplace labels have to be in French?+

It depends on where you are. In Quebec, French is required. Elsewhere, labels should be in the language your workers understand; many employers use bilingual English/French labels. This tool prints English, French, or both. Une étiquette du lieu de travail SIMDUT en français? Choisissez Français ou Bilingue.

Is this tool free?+

Yes. Make and download as many WHMIS workplace labels as you need with no account, no payment, and no usage limits.
