What is a GHS label, and what does OSHA HCS 2024 require?
A GHS label is the workplace hazard label required by OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), 29 CFR 1910.1200 — aligned with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The 2024 update (HCS 2024) brings OSHA into alignment with GHS Revision 7 and parts of Revision 8. Every container of a hazardous chemical in the workplace must carry a compliant label so that anyone handling it can identify the hazards at a glance — and the label information must match the chemical’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS). This free generator formats each of the six required elements below into a print-ready PDF in under 60 seconds, with no account required. Prefer to think of it as a fill-in template? Use the GHS label template — same tool, framed as a template you complete and reuse.
The 6 required elements of an OSHA GHS label
Under HCS 2024, a compliant workplace label produced by the chemical manufacturer, importer, or distributor must include all six of the following:
1Product Identifier
The product name or chemical identity — and it must match the name on the Safety Data Sheet so the label and SDS cross-reference.
2Signal Word
Either “Danger” (more severe hazards) or “Warning” (less severe). Only one signal word appears, chosen from the most severe hazard class.
3Hazard Pictograms
The red-bordered diamond symbols (flame, health hazard, corrosion, exclamation mark, etc.) that visually communicate the GHS hazard categories.
4Hazard Statements
Standardized H-statements (e.g., H225 “Highly flammable liquid and vapour”) describing the nature and degree of each hazard. Text comes from OSHA Appendix C.
5Precautionary Statements
P-statements covering prevention, response, storage, and disposal (e.g., P210 “Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames”).
6Supplier Information
The name, address, and telephone number of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party.
How to create a GHS label with this free tool
- 1
Enter Product Information
Enter your product name, manufacturer, and emergency phone. For pure substances with a known CAS number, use the optional CAS auto-fill to populate H-codes, signal word, and pictograms.
- 2
Add Hazard Statements
Type H-codes (e.g., H225, H319) from your Safety Data Sheet Section 2 — Hazards Identification. The tool retrieves the OSHA Appendix C statement text automatically.
- 3
Choose Template and QR
Pick GHS Standard (English) or GHS Bilingual (EN/ES). Optionally add a QR code linking to your SDS.
- 4
Review Compliance
Check your label against OSHA HCS 2024 compliance rules R01–R26. Fix any flagged errors.
- 5
Pick Size and Download
Choose a label size (1×2.625, 2×4, or 4×6 drum) and download a print-ready PDF at 300 DPI. The first download requires an email; subsequent downloads in the same session are unlocked.
How to print your GHS labels
Every label this tool makes downloads as a print-ready PDF sized to the exact label dimensions, so it prints at true physical scale. Send it to a thermal label printer loaded with GHS label stock, or print onto Avery sheets (5160, 5163, or 5164) on a standard office printer — a color laser reproduces the red-bordered GHS pictograms most reliably. For containers stored outdoors or exposed to chemical splash, use weatherproof or BS5609-rated label stock so the pictograms and hazard statements stay legible. For a full walkthrough of printers, label stock, sizes, and durability, read How to Print GHS Labels: a step-by-step guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Tellus free GHS Label Generator follow OSHA HazCom requirements?+
Yes — the generator produces labels formatted to OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 2024 / 29 CFR 1910.1200, including the Appendix C H/P statement text and the GHS pictogram format. The tool runs an automated format check (rules R01–R26) before download. You are still responsible for verifying any generated label against the manufacturer Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and for the rest of your HazCom program (training, accessible SDSs, and workplace use).
How do I print GHS labels?+
Enter your product info and hazard statements (or auto-fill from a CAS number), pick a size, and download the print-ready 300 DPI PDF. The PDF page size matches the physical label, so you can send it straight to a thermal label printer loaded with GHS label stock, or print it onto Avery label sheets (5160, 5163, or 5164) on a standard office laser or inkjet printer. For chemicals stored outdoors or exposed to splash, print on weatherproof or BS5609-rated label stock so the pictograms and text stay legible. For a full walkthrough see our guide on how to print GHS labels.
What printer and label stock should I use for GHS labels?+
For a few labels, an office laser or inkjet printer with Avery label sheets works fine — laser toner resists smudging better than inkjet. For volume or durability, a thermal-transfer label printer (Zebra, Brother, DYMO, etc.) with polypropylene or polyester GHS label stock produces water- and chemical-resistant labels. Color pictograms require a color laser or a color-capable label printer. For drums shipped by sea, use BS5609-certified label stock and ribbon.
Is it really free?+
Yes. The Tellus GHS Label Generator is free with no account required. You provide an email to unlock the first PDF download. There is no payment, no subscription, and no usage limit per session.
Does it work for chemical mixtures, not just pure substances?+
Yes. For mixtures, paints, adhesives, and other multi-ingredient products you skip the optional CAS lookup and enter the H-codes directly from your SDS Section 2. The tool then generates a compliant label using those H-codes.
Can I use this to make an "MSDS label" or a chemical bottle label?+
"MSDS" is the old name for an SDS (Safety Data Sheet) — the data document, not the label. The label that actually goes on a chemical bottle or container is the GHS label, which is exactly what this tool makes: product identifier, signal word, pictograms, and hazard statements formatted to OSHA HCS 2024. OSHA replaced "MSDS" with "SDS" when it adopted GHS in 2012 (fully effective June 2016). So if you searched for an "MSDS label," a "chemical bottle label," or a "chemical label maker," a GHS label is what you want — and you can generate one here for free.
What sizes can I print?+
Three sizes today: Small (1″ × 2.625″, Avery 5160 compatible), Medium (2″ × 4″, Avery 5163 compatible), and Large (4″ × 6″ drum format). PDF page size matches the actual label size, so it prints at true physical scale on a thermal label printer or scaled to fit on a regular Letter/A4 sheet.
Can I add a QR code that links to my SDS?+
Yes. The generator supports an optional QR code that resolves to any URL you provide (for example a Dropbox or Google Drive link to your SDS PDF). For SDS-aware QR codes that auto-resolve to the live SDS in your inventory and update on revisions, use a Tellus account.
Does the PDF I download contain a Tellus watermark?+
A small “Powered by Tellus EHS” attribution and a “verify against SDS” reminder appear in the label footer. There is no obtrusive watermark on the body of the label.
How is this different from buying a Tellus subscription?+
The free tool generates one label at a time from data you enter manually (or auto-filled by CAS lookup). A Tellus account adds: bulk label generation across your full SDS library, auto-extracted hazards from any uploaded SDS PDF, custom canvas designer for per-label edits, SDS-aware QR codes, multiple sheet layouts, and ongoing compliance monitoring.
